Zugspitze, Bayern
28.10.2023
Just a little more than an hour drive away from Munich lies a beautiful little city: Garmisch-Patenkirchen. Known for it's olympic arenas, perfect (winter) sports location and relaxing
wellness hotels, it's a well beloved travel destination in the south of Germany.
Garmisch is nestled right at the foot of Germany's highest mountain: Zugspitze.
I can highly recommend a round trip. The cog railway, built in 1928-1930, takes you right up to the glacier. Step outside and enjoy being surrounded by tons and tons of
snow! A cable car takes you up to the top.
On a clear day you'll have a stunning view from the 2962 meter high mountain. The top station is shared between Austria and Germany, so you can easily step into the other
country.
Looking down, you can spot the incredibly blue and clear lake Eibsee.
From the top, you can take a newly built ropeway right down to the lake. It's an engineering masterpiece, built with only one pillar with the incredible height of 127 m - the highest in the world.
Zugspitze
Eibsee
Lake Eibsee is incredibly clear and blue. A walk around the whole lake takes about 2 hours. At various spots you'll have a stunning view of the surrounding mountains and the Zugspitze.
After finishing your hike, the cog railway takes you back to Garmisch-Patenkirchen.
Don't forget to end your day with a relaxing time in the sauna.
Enjoy!
Partnachklamm
While you're here, go visit Partnachklamm where the water's fighting it's way through the narrow gorge. At the end you can choose between many beautiful hiking trails up the nearby mountain pastures.
